Col. Roger Harvey (US Army - Retired) is the marksmanship coach of the US Armed Forces Military Pentathlon Teams (Men and Women). With three podium finishes of his own (Bronze in Paris - 1968; Silver in Hanover - 1971; Silver in Rome - 1973), Roger's team had 5 competitors finish in the top 10 in the World in Estonia in 2019.
Classes starts with laser-assisted dry-fire training in the classroom followed by live-fire exercises at the range. You'll probably be the best shooter at the range with your first 10 shots even if you've never touched a pistol before!

Personal Protection in the Home classes. The best way to win a gun fight is NOT to be in one. Learn how to make a violent intruder go elsewhere.
– This six hour course covers the fundamentals of basic pistol marksmanship. It starts with a discussion of why students finally decided to take a class they may have been putting off. The rest of the class is adapted your "why. " We start with dry-fire training options, safety, eye dominance, shooting fundamentals (Hold Control, Breath Control, Trigger Control, Aiming, and Follow-through) using LASR and Mantis X training devices that I also use with my US Armed Forces Teams getting them ready for World Championships. You will perfect your stance and grip, good trigger manipulation, racking the slide, loading a magazine, and, after practice with training guns in the classroom, we end with live-fire at the range using small caliber handguns I provide. There is also a discussion about the emotions of shooting, including fear, and excitement. We will spend four hours in classroom exercises followed by about 2-hours at the range together. This course is typically best spread out over a couple of days. Call for dates/times. I offer group and private instruction.
– This class covers safety again (because it is sooo ... important. Then we go over firearms selection, ammunition selection, common malfunctions, basic self-protection in the home and out, We cover the three styles of handgun marksmanship (precision, flash sight picture, and point shooting), shooting multiple targets, one-handed shooting, firearm maintenance, operation and clearing malfunctions. This class allows students to handle two types of revolvers (single-action, double-action) and a range of semi-automatics of various calibers (small .22's to BIG .45 Long Colt). This module is primarily for applicants who wish to advance to an intermediate level of handgun knowledge, skill, and attitude. Most students finish this class shooting better than most other shooters at any range they visit. Many are ready for competitive shooting.
–This class covers California Penal Code sections relating to firearms and sections dealing with the permissible use of a firearm, locations where firearm possession is prohibited with special emphasis on air travel and double checking carry-on bags, civil and penal liability laws regarding firearms for the State of California, conceal carry fundamentals, threat avoidance, proper mindset and the psychological and physiological considerations of conceal carry, the importance of carrying and using a handgun responsibly and ethically for personal protection outside the home, how the three fundamental NRA rules for safe gun handling apply when carrying or using a concealed handgun outside the home, special safety considerations that must be observed when carrying or using a concealed handgun outside the home, the various techniques for storing a handgun safely outside the home, the four levels of awareness and how they apply to concealed carry outside the home, and the emotional, legal, and social aftermath of defensive shooting. Completion of this module, plus the qualification course of fire, meets the minimum requirements for renewal of a CCW. A second 4-hour block of instruction is required by OCSD for initial CCW applicants. That module covers techniques and equipment used to safely carry weapons, retain control of weapons and avoid unwarranted detection of weapons. Firearms assembly, disassembly and maintenance, and misfire management is covered in here. Threat avoidance is expanded and defensive shooting skill training, including presentation from concealment, is also included using SIRT training guns and software.
